S.O.S. (Sereias O Sirenes)

Sound is the central element of Maria Loura Estevão's installation S.O.S. (Sirens Or Sirens) at MAAT — Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology.

It takes as its starting point the Homeric poem Ulysses in The Odyssey to thematise underwater noise pollution and uses the double meaning of the French word sirènes, which means both mermaids and sirens. The installation features underwater sounds from the Tagus estuary recorded by Fish Bioacoustics lab.
