The paper, "Crepuscular vocal partitioning and thermal limits on calling behavior in the Bubbling Kassina (Kassina senegalensis) in a sub-equatorial savanna," looks at the acoustic strategies used by these widespread anurans to combat the harsh atmospheric conditions of Mozambique.
Key Discoveries
Bimodal Strategy: To overcome extreme temperature, wind, and desiccation risks in open savannas, K. senegalensis utilizes a distinct bimodal calling pattern, peaking sharply at dawn and dusk. This crepuscular shift should also allow them to optimize signal transmission when atmospheric conditions are most stable.
Thermal Window: The study identified a calling window between 23°C and 27°C. Once temperatures breach 30°C , calling activity drops, mapping out a upper thermal limits for their vocal behavior.
Influence of Moonlight: Beyond temperature and photoperiod, lunar cycles seems to influence the timing and intensity of calling.
